Your pregnancy is such a magical chapter, and a maternity photoshoot is a beautiful way to capture that glow before baby arrives. But between tired days, outfit choices, and busy schedules, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

As a professional maternity and newborn photographer, I’ve helped hundreds of mums prepare for their photos with confidence and joy. Here’s your ultimate checklist for a stress-free Maternity Photoshoot to help you feel calm, camera-ready, and radiant on the big day.

Pregnant woman and man sit closely in a softly lit room. She is wearing a white bra and he is in a white shirt. They look at each other lovingly.

1. Book at the Right Time

  • Ideal timing: 28–34 weeks pregnant.

  • Earlier for twins or high-risk pregnancies.

  • Book 4–6 weeks in advance if possible—photographers’ diaries fill fast!

👗 2. Plan What to Wear

    • Choose flattering, bump-friendly clothes like maxi dresses or gowns with stretch and flow.

    • Stick to soft, neutral colours or warm earth tones for timeless images.

    • Avoid busy patterns or logos.

    • Don’t forget accessories: simple earrings or a flower crown can elevate your look.

🪄 Bonus: Ask if your photographer offers a client wardrobe (I do!)

👨‍👩‍👧 3. Outfit Tips for Partner & Kids

    • Coordinate but don’t match.

    • Keep tones similar—think soft blues, creams, blush, or sage.

    • Avoid bold patterns and neon colours.

    • Bring a hairbrush and snacks for toddlers (trust me on this!).

    💄 4. Beauty & Self-Care Prep

  • Hair & makeup: Schedule a make-up artist or do it yourself—whatever makes you feel amazing.

  • Nails: Clean, natural nails look great in bump shots.

  • Hydrate well the day before.

  • Avoid tight clothing before the shoot to prevent skin marks.

👜 5. What to Bring to Your Session

    • A casual outfit if you want variety (white shirt and jeans, leggings and cropped top, etc.)

    • Water and snacks (especially if outdoors).

    • Comfortable shoes for walking to the location. (especially if outdoors)

    • nude, black and/or white underwear.

    • Touch-up makeup and a brush.

    • Any props or ultrasound photos you want to include.

Couple in black caps, "Mom" and "Dad," hugging. Woman holds ultrasound photos. Casual attire, intimate setting, joyful mood.

    🌤️ 6. On the Day

    • Arrive with a full belly and an open mind.

    • Trust your photographer to guide you into flattering, relaxed poses.

    • Don’t stress about the weather—some of the most magical photos happen on cloudy days.

    • Most importantly, have fun and enjoy this moment.
