People’s interest in maternity photography has really exploded over the last few years. 6 years ago, when I was pregnant with my son, you couldn’t have paid me a million pounds to document myself in that “condition.” The recent surge in the popularity of documenting this exciting time in a mother’s life is causing me to rethink. The images I see (and take) of these women, are beyond description. They’re beautiful in the kind of way that there simply aren’t words to describe, but that’s OK, because you don’t NEED words. These images make you feel. Photos in this post are from my last marernity session with Gemma in Manchester. Here, my top tips on how to take beautiful pregnancy photos. Wait until you're big, but not too big. You want your belly to be big and beautiful, but you don't want it to be so large that posing and holding different positions for any length of time becomes taxing. I suggests taking photos right around 30 weeks. That's when your belly gets really round but it's not too heavy yet. Of course each pregnancy and pregnant belly is different so use your own stamina as a guide. Avoid background clutter. Just like professional photographers, style your backdrop. So think about what's behind you. When choosing your location, avoid standing in front of a messy living room -- or worse, a messy bathroom. Instead, lie mermaid-style on a solid-color couch or tape some ironed white sheets to the wall and -- voila -- an instant studio backdrop. Or change things up and step outside: Pick a tranquil spot in your backyard or nearby park or beach to set up camp. We love the leaning-up-against-a-tree look, or, if you're at the beach, try a profile shot, where you're sitting up and looking out at the sea Turn off the flash. The on-camera flash will be a total wash-out. I suggests standing right in front of an open door or window to get great natural light instead. If you're shooting outside avoid midday sun. The best times to go outside are early in the morning or an hour or two before sunset when there's that golden, sun-tanned, highlights-in-the-hair light. Wear something tight and stretchy. The whole point of the shoot is to see the gorgeous belly, right? Tight, stretchy clothes will best accentuate all your great curves. Never wear maternity clothes, since their primary objective is often to feel good on, rather than flatter your shape. I recommend trying some fitted Gap or Old Navy tank tops in solid colors instead. Skip the florals, plaids, and checks, You want to be able to look back at these pictures in 10 or 20 years and still think the photos look great. Whereas really stylized clothes can get dated, solid darks and neutrals are timeless. Alternatively, skip clothes entirely. I have a set of sheer curtains , and I use one panel to wrap the breasts and another panel to wrap the belly. Find a great photographer. You want someone you feel comfortable with and will have fun around taking your picture. If your husband fits the bill, ask him to take the pics (and also to haul any extra props or equipment). Inspired by the winter season Rachel and James (both barristers) decided to have a stunning winter Christmas wedding at Great John Street Hotel in Manchester.Possibly Manchester’s most urban wedding venue, this original Victorian school house has been transformed into a chic luxury townhouse hotel.Rachel and James decided to keep with the christmassy winter wonderland theme with a color palette of claret, ivory and silver for their decor. After a heartwarming ceremony in the Great John Street Hotel, guests proceeded to Rooftop Lounge for the reception. The space was illuminated by soft red up-lighting with beautiful Christmas Trees. White reception tables were decorated with vases of glittering ornaments surrounded by a variety of candles for a cozy winter look. There are so many details I absolutely love—see them all below. MATERNITY SESSION, FAMILY PORTRAITS, CHILDREN PHOTOGRAPHY Trying to decide what to wear for your photo shoot can seem like a trying and daunting task. Ultimately you want to stay true to your and your family’s unique “look” and personality, but there are a few tricks and tips you can follow to allow your clothes to really add a new dimension to your photos and take them to another level. The Dos: – Neutral colors (grey, beige, tan, white etc.) look classy and timeless and never go out of style. – Make use of textured fabrics (like lace, denim, or suede) to add an interesting visual element to your photos. – Do try to avoid styles that will become quickly outdated. – Make use of accessories, such as hats, headbands, scarves, and jackets to really add to your look. – When dressing a younger baby (a few months old), avoid clothing that might “swamp” them. Stick to simple, somewhat tight clothes like a cute, funky onesie or romper or cool, colourful nappy covers. – A fun little tutu makes a great accessory for little girls. Flowing tulle skirts or other items made of similar material can add a wonderful sense of movement to your images. The Donts: – Don’t make your clothes too matchy-matchy and avoid all-white or all-black combos. Instead, try to find outfits that compliment each other in both colour and design. – Avoid clothes with logos/characters or loud patterns. They act as distractions and draw the viewer’s eyes away from the photo’s main subject– you! -Don’t forget about your shoes!! They will also be showcased in your photos. Boots, for example, look great with many different outfit combos (jeans, leggings, skirts, etc.) and can really tie your family’s outfits together. Avoid trainers, crocs, and white socks. -Avoid distracting hair accessories. If you don’t want to wear your hair down, a simple bobby pin can work very well. – Avoid wearing watches and sunglasses, and please do not keep your mobile phone in your pocket during the shoot (it creates strange line patterns on your trousers)! NEWBORN SHOOTS: – Nude is best for baby. – For Mum: a black or white tank-top/vest, short-sleeved shirt, or tube-top is best. Keep it simple, avoid patterns or logos. – For Dad: a simple black or white T-shirt (without logos or patterns). For dads who are comfortable going topless, I would urge you to do so– these skin-to-skin images are a wonderful way to show the bond between dad and baby. PROPS: If you have any fun or important family items (like a favourite toy or blanket, for example) that you would like to incorporate into your shoot, please feel free to bring them along! You’ve seen the wedding blogs, the bridal magazines, and the professional looking shots on Facebook of your engaged friends laughing and kissing each other with the sun setting behind them. It’s officially called engagement photography, but essentially it’s a just a chance for a professional photographer to capture two people in love who wants to share it with the world, or even just between themselves. More than that, it’s an opportunity for you to work with your photographer for the first time. It’s an opportunity for you to see how I shoot and for me to get to know you better as a couple. If you haven’t had a photographer move within inches of you to take a photograph, it can be a bit intimidating at first. It’s a good way for me to help you get comfortable in front of the camera so that there are no surprises on your big day. These sessions can be as fun and elaborate as you’d like to make it, so at the end of the day, I’d like for you to not only remember the day you had a photo shoot, but also the day you had a great date…and had a photographer tag along. These beautiful photographs have been used to create “save-the-date” cards, on the wedding websites, announcements and even incorporated into wedding day decor pieces. How long is a session? Your engagement session will last between 1-2 hours and takes place at a location of your choice. It’s best to keep to one location so we spend our time shooting rather than traveling. Bring a prop that is either fun or significant to your relationship – bikes, hats, skateboards, surfboards, dogs, or even cars! This brings an element of spontaneity, creativity, and originality to the shoot which makes the session more fun and memorable What should we wear? Wear something fun. Something nice. And most importantly, something that is you. If that’s a bowtie and geek chic glasses. Do it. Floral summer dress and a pair of cowboy boots. Work it. These are your photos to look back on years from now. I recommend layering up. It’ll allow you to add variety to your session without having to completely change outfits. It’ll also come in handy if the weather drops like it often does in England. Can we do something creative? Yes, absolutely yes. Do you want to bring a big white arm chair out to the middle of a field of wildflowers? Yes. A desserts only picnic in a forest? Let’s do it. What if we’re not that comfortable in front of the camera? Don’t worry about it. It’ll be my pleasure to show you that it’s not true. If you’re in love, it’ll eventually come out and I’ll be there to capture it. You’ll forget I’m even there with the camera pretty quickly. The first thing you need to understand about a newborn session is that it takes a lot of time and a lot of patience from everyone. Most parents may think that their newborn session will be a breeze, but the truth is even the "ideal baby" will still be challenging. Please, and I stress, please don't even think about scheduling a doctors visit before your session. This will stress out your baby and the session most certainly will not go well. On that note, newborn sessions take a lot of time, so please do not schedule anything after your session. I would hate for you to have to rush out early and not get the images you want. We may spend up to 2-3 hours photographing your baby and wouldn't have it any other way. We allow enough time to account for your baby to eat and for those moments when your little one decides it’s time to use the restroom and we need to clean up. I expect your baby to go to the bathroom on my backgrounds and props; it's just part of the experience and happens every time. My stuff washes easily. Please don't feel embarrassed or feel the need to apologize when this happens at your session. I highly recommend bringing a change of clothes because chances are good that baby might go to the bathroom on you. It also accounts for time to change setups for different poses. We want you to have a great experience and images from our studio. I do keep the studio between 21 and 25 degrees so you will want to dress appropriately. If I am not sweating then it is not warm enough in the studio! So, dress accordingly and maybe wear layers that can be removed if necessary. We’ll photograph your baby in the buff so please to not bring outfits for the baby. Most clothing items swallow the baby and we prefer to capture the naturalness of your baby. We believe it is by capturing the innocence of a nude baby that makes our images art. What to do before your scheduled session? -Give your baby a sponge bath and don’t forget the lotion. -Put clothing and diaper on loosely to avoid red marks. -Grab a pacifier even if you do not plan on letting your baby use one. Pacifiers help soothe babies and will make the session go much smoother. -Bring long sleeve black shirt if you plan on being in the photograph with your baby. Please make sure the shirt has no buttons and is free from lint. Try to refrain from feeding your baby until you arrive at the studio. The first thing you will do when you arrive is feed your baby. Most babies will fall asleep in the car but will wake up long enough to eat to fall back asleep and that’s okay. As soon as your baby falls asleep, I will ask that you (mom) allow us to take over. Babies can smell moms and will not sleep the way we like. You are more than welcome to sit in on the session and watch. Please do not bring your digital camera or use your mobile phone to take photographs during this session. You will also feel the need to comfort your baby when he/she seems unsettled or starts crying but please refrain from reacting. We have techniques we use to settle your baby back to sleep. If we feel that your baby has not eaten enough, we will give your baby back to get his/her belly full. Expecting a little one of your own or know someone who is?
