Why an Outdoor Branding Photoshoot Is the Best Investment for Your Business (And What to Expect)

There's a moment that happens in almost every outdoor branding photoshoot I photograph. We find the right spot — maybe it's a sun-drenched terrace, a cobblestone lane, a harbour wall with the sea behind us — and my client takes a breath, relaxes their shoulders, and just looks like themselves. Not like a LinkedIn headshot taken against a grey wall. Like the actual person behind their business.
That moment is exactly why I love outdoor branding photography. And it's exactly why those images tend to perform better on Instagram, LinkedIn, and websites than anything taken in a studio.
If you've been thinking about investing in professional branding photos but aren't sure where to start — or whether outdoors is right for you — this post will walk you through everything.

What Is a Branding Photoshoot (And Why Does It Matter)?
A branding photoshoot isn't just a set of nice headshots. It's a full visual story of who you are, what you do, and the feeling clients get when they work with you. The images you come away with are used across your website, social media, press features, speaker bios, email newsletters, and anything else that asks: who is this person?
Here's the truth: people buy from people they feel they know. Professional, intentional brand photography fast-tracks that connection. It tells your story before you've said a single word.

Why the Outdoors Makes All the Difference
1. Natural light is simply more flattering. There's a reason photographers have been chasing golden hour since the first camera was invented. Soft, warm natural light makes skin look luminous, adds depth to images, and creates that warm, editorial quality that studio setups often struggle to replicate.

2. Your location tells part of your story. If you're a sustainability consultant, a shoot amongst olive groves says something different than a corporate boardroom. If you're a coach, a cliffside with an expansive view communicates possibility and perspective in a way no background can. Outdoor locations add layers of meaning — subtly, powerfully, without needing a caption.
3. You relax more than you'd expect. Being outside, moving around, sitting on a low wall or walking through an interesting street — it all helps to shake off the stiffness that so many people feel the moment a camera points at them. The result? Images that feel genuine rather than posed.

4. Outdoor images perform better on social media. Scroll through LinkedIn or Instagram, and you'll quickly notice: images with natural light, real environments, and a sense of personality stop the thumb. They feel human. They invite a connection. That's what great branding photography should do.
What to Expect at Your Outdoor Branding Photoshoot
Before the shoot: We'll have a conversation about your business, your ideal clients, and the feeling you want your brand to convey. From there, I'll suggest locations that match your vision — whether that's a beautifully weathered urban setting, a coastal backdrop, or somewhere lush and green. We'll also talk through what to wear (I'll send you a full style guide) and what props, if any, make sense to bring.

On the day: Sessions typically run between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on your package. We'll move through several locations and looks, and I'll guide you throughout — you don't need to know how to pose. My job is to make you feel comfortable, direct you naturally, and capture you at your best. We might walk, sit, laugh, work, look into the distance — it all depends on what feels right for your brand.
After the shoot: You'll receive a gallery of fully edited, high-resolution images — ready to use straight away across your platforms. Turnaround is typically 2–3 weeks.
Who Is Outdoor Branding Photography For?
Honestly? Almost everyone. But it works particularly well for:
Entrepreneurs and small business owners who want their online presence to feel personal and trustworthy
Coaches, consultants, and creatives whose clients are investing in them specifically
Professionals transitioning careers or launching something new who need imagery that reflects where they're going, not just where they've been
Anyone who's been hiding behind a logo and knows it's time to show their face

A Few Things My Clients Always Tell Me Afterwards
"I didn't think I was photogenic — but I actually love these."
"I've already updated my website, LinkedIn, and Instagram, and the response has been incredible."
"I feel like these finally look like me."
That last one is my favourite because that's the whole point.
